NVRC Receives Grant to Standardize Client Data Collection through CAREWare
  • To improve regional understanding of how care provided with Ryan White funds in Northern Virginia compares to quality standards, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has chosen the Northern Virginia Regional Commission to pilot a program to improve its ability to capture and report client level data (CLD)
    • Ryan White is the federal program for services to people living with HIV and AIDS
  • This $100,000 grant will enable NVRC to:
    • Purchase equipment for up to 10 agencies in Northern Virginia that provide medical and other services to persons living with HIV and AIDS
    • Provide technological support to install CAREWare, a software program from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), as the regional standard client data system
  • CAREWare is free software for managing and monitoring HIV clinical and supportive care and has extensive reporting capabilities
  • The goals of this pilot include:
    • Improving the region’s ability to plan for future AIDS services by making accurate and complete CLD available for decision making
    • Improving the region’s ability to provide federal and state funders with quality CLD on required reports
    • Improving the quality and completeness of the region’s contribution of CLD to Virginia statewide and metro Washington, DC AIDS initiatives
  • At the completion of the one-year project period, NVRC will sustain the reporting system using free CAREWare support

Why is the Pilot Program Needed?
  • Inadequate infrastructure and inconsistency in software have led to an inability to collect data on clients served through the Ryan White CARE ACT program
  • Although a few vendors are using the CAREWare program to report client data to VDH, the majority of NVRC’s vendors track client-level data using legacy software or client data systems which are difficult to access and sometimes lack reliability, accuracy and needed report generation
  • Many vendors must currently use more than one system to produce client data reports
