  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) -- Many other items are hazardous and should not be disposed of in the trash.  This includes solvents, cleaning agents, and oil-based paints.  Every jurisdiction in Northern Virginia offers events for residents to drop off these materials.
    • The USEPA defines HHW as "waste with properties that make it dangerous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment.  The universe of hazardous wastes is large and diverse.  Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, contained gases, or sludges.  They can be by-products of manufacturing processes or simply discarded commercial products, like cleaning fluids or pesticides."1  Spent flourescent lamps or electronics are considered forms of HHW as well.

    • The State of Virginia maintains a website for collection sites for used motor oil, oil filters, and antifreeze.

      • Recycling just two gallons of used oil it can generate enough electricity to run the average household for almost 24 hours.
