(Fairfax, VA – December 1, 2017) The Northern Virginia Regional Commission at its meeting of November 30 adopted a resolution opposing the elimination of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction as presently being considered by Congress.
According to data obtained from the IRS for Federal Tax Year 2015, nearly 50% of income tax filers in Northern Virginia deducted more than $8.8 billion in state and local taxes from their federal income taxes. The adopting of the SALT deduction was instituted with the passage of the Revenue Act of 1913 that introduced the federal income tax. The SALT deduction prevents taxpayers from being double taxed on the same income.
NVRC created a map by zip code of the value of the SALT deduction in the region.
