NVRC's Solarize NoVA program achieved a significant milestone exceeding 300 contracts for solar arrays. To date the Solarize NoVA program has resulted in more than 2.3 MW of solar with construction value in excess of $7 million. Solarize NoVA proudly utilizes the services of local solar contractors. The combined environmental benefits of the solar arrays include the annual offset of 2,485 tons of CO2 which is the equivalent of 2,464,223 pounds of coal being burned or 287,423,492 cellphones being charged (Source: US EPA Greenhouse Gas Calculator). The Solarize NoVA program is a collaborative effort among NVRC's local government partners utilizing the expertise of the Local Energy Alliance Program as Administrator. The Piedmont Environmental Council has been a strong supporter of the program sharing information in the Piedmont from Loudoun County down to Albemarle County. The Solarize NoVA program kicked off in September 2014.
Recently NVRC received Gold designation by the SolSmart program for its support of solar in the region. “We are proud to have achieved this designation in recognition of the Commission’s efforts to promote solar energy in the region,” said Vienna Mayor and NVRC Chairman Laurie DiRocco. “Combined with energy efficiency/conservation efforts the Commission is making a concerted effort in helping residents and businesses reduce their energy usage and produce their own.”
"We are grateful for the support of our local government partners, the leadership of our Commission members, the Local Energy Alliance Program, the solar contractors and the Piedmont Environmental Council for their support of this important sustainability effort," concluded Bob Lazaro, Executive Director of the Commission.
The Solarize NoVA Spring campaign is ongoing through June 14.
