[ARCHIVED] New Annual Census Population Estimates Data Released

US Census Puzzle

Population Growth – NoVA Overall Population Declined From 7/1/2020 to 7/1/2021

The county/city population section of the NOVA Region Dashboard has been updated. Specifically, the Annual Estimates Data sub-section was updated to include 2021 population estimates, annual change amounts, and key findings on what contributed to the population change in Northern Virginia and nationally.

The town population estimates were not released by the Census Bureau today and are not scheduled for release until May. Upon release in May that information will be updated on the dashboard. The demographic characteristics of county/city population change are scheduled for release in June.

Key findings from today’s population data release includes those finding listed below, as well as many more that are found on the dashboard.

1. From July 1, 2020 to July 1, 2021, Northern Virginia's population declined for the first time since Census Bureau annual record keeping began in 1970. It declined by an estimated 12,000 persons.
2. Three of Northern Virginia's jurisdictions experienced growth, those being the counties of Loudoun and Prince William and the City of Fairfax. These three jurisdictions are outer jurisdictions. The other six jurisdictions experienced declines.
3. Northern Virginia domestic out-migration was the factor that contributed to Northern Virginia's population decline during the first year of the pandemic.
