Metropolitan Area of Barcelona delegates visit Boston and the Northern Virginia region to advance their sustainable urban development goals as part of the EU's IURC Program

The City of Boston and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) are pleased to announce they will host three delegates from the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), Spain, from April 25th to 29th, 2022. This study visit is part of their participation in the European Union's International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) program in North America. IURC is the world's largest city-to-city cooperation program and an international network of reference for urban innovation and sustainable urban development.

AMB, Boston, and NVRC have opened their doors to dialogue and partner with new global peers, draw upon a wider pool of good practices and receive support in identifying innovative models to achieve their goals. The three entities started cooperating in September 2021, participating in several technical calls and now conducting the first study visit to work on the following thematic areas:

  • Renovation Wave- Energy efficiency in buildings
  • Urban Agenda – Public space and urban models
  • Sustainable Urban Mobility & Transport

AMB will subsequently host Boston and NVRC in October 2022. The cities will continue cooperating until December 2023, developing an Urban Cooperation Action plan which includes actions and pilot projects that can produce a transferable result since the program's main objective is to show concrete progress and impact.
