Salary: Starting at $101,001 for those meeting the minimum qualifications; capacity to expand to $134,668 for those with additional relevant experience who also meet most of the preferred qualifications

Description:   NVRC is recruiting qualified candidates for the Director of Human Services position.  Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this position is responsible for the administration and management of the entire division including coordination, work plan development, program and division budget preparation/review, and individual work product review. It supervises the daily work of 4-5 professional staff and manages and supervises consultants engaged for technical program support.

The Director Human Services reviews and edits all division staff proposals, non-routine reports, white papers etc. to be consistent with state and federal laws as well as grant requirements and to ensure that they are defensible, interpreted appropriately, and contain appropriate tone and sensitivity to political issues.  It provides ongoing grant development.  This position represents the Commission at meetings, serving on boards and committees, and represents the Commission before funders and elected officials.  Serves as intergovernmental liaison among professional colleagues in the region and state of Virginia.  As is needed with a small staff, this position periodically jumps in to conduct project tasks directly, to assist with a newly developing project area or to help where high visibility or high-level technical expertise is called for.  

Unlike most human service work, this is not a direct service position but rather one which works with select subcontractors to deliver critical services to persons with human service needs or to ensure those with unmet needs can find agencies and programs that offer relevant help.  These include needs associated with being HIV-positive, needing affordable housing, experiencing homelessness, aging, and other issues.

Minimum Qualifications:  Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a master’s degree in social services, human services, or related field; PLUS five years of social work or human service experience, two of which were supervising professional staff.  Valid drivers’ license or access to transportation sufficient to meet work responsibilities required. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Additional years of management and supervision  
  • Knowledge of demographics, political environments, and issues re: Northern Virginia
  • Experience with federal grants management, preferably on health/human services or housing programs 
  • Previous work experience with persons with HIV; Bilingual English/Spanish
